Nationality:
A candidate must be either:
(a) A citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India. or
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Srilanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
- Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
- Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.
Age Limits:
- IMA: Candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1984 and not later than 1st January, 1989
- Naval Academy: Candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1986 (2nd January, 1984 in case of NCC/Naval Wing ‘C’ Certificate holders) and not later than 1st January, 1989
- Air Force Academy: Candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1985 and not later than 1st January, 1989
- Officers Training Academy (Men): Candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1983 and not later than 1st January, 1989
- Officers Training Academy (Women):
- Candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1983 and not later than 1st January, 1989.
- Widows of Defence Personnel who have died in harness, will be granted age-relaxation of four years in the upper age limit, they should have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1979 and not later than 1st January, 1989.
NOTE:
Date of Birth Certificate:
The date of birth accepted by the Commission is that entered in the Matriculation or Secondary School Leaving Certificate or in a certificate recognised by an Indian University as equivalent to Matriculation or in an extract from a Register of Matriculates maintained by a University, which extract must be certified by the proper authority of the University or in the Higher Secondary or an equivalent examination certificate.
No other document relating to age like horoscopes, affidavits, birth extracts from Municipal Corporation, service records and the like will be accepted.
Once the date of birth is recorded in the Commission, no change will be allowed subsequently (or at any other Examination of the Commission) on any grounds whatsoever.
Sex and Marital Status:
- For IMA, Naval and Air Force Academy, only unmarried male candidates are eligible.
- For OTA the male candidate can either be married or unmarried.
- Female candidates are only eligible for the OTA if:
- Female candidate should be unmarried, or issue less widowed or issue less divorcees.
- Female candidates who are widowed of defense personnel who died in harness may or may not have children
NOTE:
Candidates who are eligible when unmarried, must undertake not to marry until they complete their full training. A candidate who marries during training shall be discharged and will be liable to refund all expenditure incurred on him by the Government.
Educational Qualifications:
For admission to the examination, a candidate must have:
- I.M.A. and Officers’ Training Academy (OTA): Degree of a recognised University or equivalent.
- Naval Academy: B.Sc. (with Physics & Mathematics) or Bachelor of Engineering.
- Air Force Academy : Degree of Recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.
Proof of Graduation:
- Graduates with first choice as Army/Navy/Air Force are to submit proof of graduation provisional certificates on the date of commencement of the SSB Interview at the SSB.
- Candidates who are studying in the final year Degree course and have yet to pass the final year degree examination can also apply but they will be required to submit proof of passing the degree examination to reach the following address and deadline.
- IMA/OTA as first choice:

- Candidates possessing professional and technical qualifications which are recognised by government as equivalent to professional and technical degrees would also be eligible for admission to the examination.
- Note I: Candidates who are debarred by the Ministry of Defence from holding any type of commission in the Defence Services shall not be eligible for admision to the examination and if admitted, their candidature will be cancelled.
- Note II: In the event of Air Force candidates being suspended from Flying training for failure to learn flying, they would be absorbed in the Navigation/Administration/Logistic Branch of the IAF. This will be subject to availability of vacancies and fulfilling the laid down qualitative requirements (including 60% in graduation).
